Is there a life after double total hip replacements??

I had my left hip replaced in September 2005, and am now waiting to accept the right hip replaced, hopefully quite early in 2006. I have been told that I won't be able to do things like kneel following double hip replacement, sit on the floor/embankment etc., and that bending will be difficult, all due to the danger of dislocation. Has anyone else had a double hip replacement and managed to live a fairly normal life afterward? I am just 61, and while I accept that yoga might not be a good idea, I do not desire to recollect that I will take to spend the next xx years being sedentery!!

Re: Is at that place a life later on double full hip replacements??

I have had both of my hips replaced at age 59, four years ago in split up surgeries several months apart. I don't know who told yous these things but either they didn't desire to raise your hopes too much or they were talking most the Early on postal service-op period, not life subsequently these hips heal and go their force back. I am here to enhance your hopes.

To fear that your life later THR will be sedentary is totally unwarranted. If annihilation, it's life with the painful hip that would have become more than sedentary and maybe would take concluded with you lot in a wheelchair; the hip replacement is and so that you WON'T exist so sedentary and you should expect the next 20 yrs. being able to exist far more than agile than you would with hip pain that sucks the life out of you; I know considering I've been at that place.

Now for the realities as I meet them: After 4 years, I can kneel and go up although it is easier if I have something to brace on (like a chair) and fifty-fifty at present, if I am doing something where I have to kneel and rising over and over (similar gardening) I go out my kneeling bench. It took me a long time to be able to put socks on and clip toenails without the aid of a sock helper or another person. Simply now I can do information technology merely fine. I lost the power to cross my legs at the knee or ankle-on-reverse-knee joint or sit "indian"mode LONG BEFORE my hips were replaced. I never fully regained the ability to do that comfortably although ankle-on-opposite-knee is deemed a "safe" position. I spent too many years condign more disabled with osteoarthritis and these old muscles just didn't return to the flexibility that I had when I was 30 yrs younger. The approach used by my surgeon dictated that I follow a certain set of precautions for several months. Now I "violate" them ofttimes. With both hips, at that place is 1 precaution that I will follow forever, and that is the technique for picking something upward from the flooring. I am not comfy sitting on the floor and I avoid it where possible. Since my knees are fine, I tin can (and practise) kneel on the flooring and sit down on my haunches. Information technology took me a long time to do this comfortably because my thigh muscles were really tight. I can walk miles (I did 3 miles yesterday), I take no pain, I climb ladders, I take no pain meds, and perhaps about important, I have a much-improved mental attitude about life. I no longer avoid activities where I might have to stand or walk for long periods. I can now shop til I drop (or until my feet injure!). I tin can't speak for yoga - never did it, never will, but certainly there are other ways to practise if yoga doesn't work out for you.

I did not make it where I am today quickly. I did those exercises 3 times a day for months. I spent hours at the gym getting back into shape. Information technology was months before I could cut my ain toenails. My first "walks" were measured in yards, not miles. I effigy that, betwixt the ii THRs, I spent the better role of a twelvemonth preparing for, having, and rehabbing from them. Merely it was all worth it and I hope the same success for you.

Re: Is there a life after double total hip replacements??

I am nearly eleven months after bilateral hip resurfacing, and my "party flim-flam" now is to squat and jump upwards into a star jump. Now it is too late for resurfacing on your right hip, just y'all might consider information technology for the left. Dislocation gamble on a resurfaced hip is one hundredth that of a THR hip with normal size brawl (.05% cf 5.0%). If you don't want to get resurfaced, then go for a large ball metallic on metal THR. The large ball size reduces the hazard of dislocation, well-nigh downwardly to the risk level of a resurfaced hip.

Re: Is in that location a life after double total hip replacements??

Hi Fanny,

I am thinking that if that is what your surgeon is telling you, you may want to find a different surgeon! Now, everyone is different and your present physical condition is a big consideration, just I can't imagine anyone telling you things like that unless in that location are other circumstanses.

I had simultaneous bilateral THR 18 months agone at historic period 53. I am NOT sedentary!!! As soon every bit I get off this calculator, I am heading to the barn to ride my new Hanovarian mare. We volition be doing dressage and jumping. When I get habitation, I am going mountainbiking with my DH. This evening nosotros will lift weights. I second Tobias, my life after bilateral THR is the all-time information technology has ever been! I very rarely fifty-fifty call up about my hips and I do get down on the ground often, can sit indian style, cantankerous legs, kneel, squat, whatever. My surgeon lifted all restrictions so if it feels ok, I am good to go.

RP: Even with total new hips, I can squat and leap. If resurfacing was available to me, I would have been happy to go that fashion, but there was besides much damage already. However, THR works so well for me, I really do not have any concrete limitations. Like Tobias, I worked hard for that. I am very fortunate to take had an outstanding surgeon and I was/am in amend physical status than boilerplate. FWIW, I have Stryker titanium/highly crosslinked poly hips. My surgeon chose that since he knows that I nonetheless want to run at least some. I still do yoga also and have pretty darn skilful range of motion.

Then Fanny, is there life after bilateral THR? You betcha!!! How much depends on you and a good surgeon. Stay stiff and postiive.

Re: Is in that location a life subsequently double total hip replacements??

Thank you for your answer - all the answers I received gave me promise! I noticed that I got the dates wrong, it should of course accept been 2006 for the ane I've had done, and 2007 for the next one.

Information technology wasn't the surgeon who said I wouldn't be able to kneel etc., it was the physio. He said there is a way to kneel with one hip replaced, but not two. I oasis't yet had the hazard to ask the surgeon what I volition and won't be able to do, my time talking to him has been quite limited. I hope to run across him when I get to the dispensary on 27th Nov for my check upwardly. It was the SHO who said I wouldn't be able to become dorsum to yoga, he wasn't sure near dancing, equally he wasn't familiar with my type of dancing. He did say I would be able to walk, and walk round the shops - as if I want to spend the residuum of my life walking circular the shops for my physical activity!

The operated hip is doing and so well I just can't expect to become the other one done and leave there and savor life over again!!

Thanks once again for all your replies

Re: Is there a life after double total hip replacements??

Fanny,

Do you know what blazon of procedure and device y'all will be having? Information technology sounds to me like yous are very active and fit and if so, the second THR should exist a bang-up improvemnent in your life. I call up I would definatly find a different PT still!!

I had posterior approach, MIS, uncemented, metal/poly prothesis, simultaneous bilateral THR 18 mons ago. And as I said earlier, I DO still do yoga. At that place are a few poses I do not do anymore, but since I have no restrictions, for the nigh role I have no trouble. And, yea, like Tobias, I kneel all the time. Don't even recollect about information technology.

What blazon of dance do y'all practise? If you go to the stickies posted at the top of this page and read some of them, you volition see nosotros have several serious dancers here, however doing their thing!

I believe much of what y'all can do following THR has to do with your physical condition both before and after surgery. If you take strong muscles, tendons, ligaments, they volition help hold the joint together, thus minimizing the take chances of dislocation and protecting the articulation.

It too is extremely of import to find a skilled surgeon, who tin can exercise some intircate work without tearing everything autonomously.

I like your attitude!
